why were all these screw-faced grimers now big-upping the kind of tunes you’d normally hear on a hed kandi compilation? you can thank ayia napa for that, a popular holiday spot for brits. roska will also release his debut album on rinse recordings later this year.Īt first it can be kind of confusing just how or why this style has gained such traction in the hardcore scene. the great thing about roska though is that he is versitile and dabbles in clubby good-vibe stuff as well, as evidenced in his remix of nate young’s “ be the one” & producing my no-so-guilty pleasure “ love 2 nite” featuring jamie george. roska has released several essential 12"s of straight up funky instrumentals, catering more towards djs than anyone else tunes are long and repetitive, meant to be mixed. Roska is a major figure in the ukf scene and is known to represent a more street-funky rawness as opposed to, say, the clubby remix mega-force known as crazy cousinz. this seriously bugs me out each & every time. i first heard this tune a couple months ago on a mix. it’s a departure from his typical dubstep inclinations, moving more towards the scene’s housier tendencies. & now romania’s the-artist-formerly-known-as-trg has jumped on the format-bandwagon with his release on tempa, “ now you know”. zomby’s “ one foot ahead of the other” & untold’s “gonna work out fine”. & lastly, as factmag points out, 2x12" have recently become the format of choice for “avant-dubstep producers”, i.e. you can really hear cooly g evolving from her usually minimalist disposition. also did one of my favorite remixes of last year, xx’s “ basic space”.īack to mary anne hobbs, on her show last week she featured a mix from gonja sufi and an INCREDIBLE mix of unreleased dubs from funky’s first lady cooly g. & since we’re on the subject, i also recently came across this video of james blake & mount kimbie performing last year in a norwegian church. it’s one of those head turners/& now for something completely different-type things. & this tune from mary anne hobbs’ radio show on 24 september 2009.
